Oahu Dining Guide

The following restaurants are presented by neighborhood, from the North Shore through Honolulu to Kailua & Kaneohe. To be listed, a restaurant must offer three or four vegetarian dishes or be exceptional at fewer. It is best to call ahead to check the restaurant's hours and to make reservations. Members must show their current VSH membership card to receive special offers and discounts. We are unable to check all listings personally; changes may take place without notice. Many of the establishments listed have websites with menus. Natural food stores and caterers are listed at the end.

A CAUTIONARY NOTE

Only Peace Cafe and Loving Hut (listed below at "Punahou St. to University Ave.") and Simple Joy and a second Loving Hut (listed below at "Ward Ave. to Keeaumoku") are 100% Vegan, and only a few more are exclusively vegetarian. For the rest, the people preparing and serving your food may neither understand nor respect your food choices. Your dishes may be made with chicken stock or with fish sauce or flakes. They may be prepared alongside meat, egg, or dairy dishes, and may contain remnants of the above. Ultimately it is the responsibility of each diner to discuss the contents of each dish with the waiter or manager and to make his/her requirements vividly clear. This Guide cannot guarantee that any dish that you order in these restaurants are vegetarian or vegan.

GENERAL ADVICE

  • Most Thai and Vietnamese restaurants have vegetarian sections on their menus and may offer brown rice. Request no fish sauce. Most Vietnamese restaurants now offer vegan pho (made with vegetable broth) and vegan summer/spring rolls, even if these are not on their menus.
  • Most Chinese restaurants will offer up whatever you request. Tell them what vegetables, noodle, or sauce, e.g., bitter melon with look fun noodles and black bean sauce. Request no chicken stock. You may also request reduced soy sauce and oil in the cooking and no MSG. (Your request can be honored because Chinese dishes are generally cooked to order, with the exception of soups, dumplings, egg rolls, and similar preparations.) Increasingly, Chinese restaurants offer brown rice.
  • Most Italian and many continental restaurants have one or two pasta primavera dishes (or can readily prepare one on request). Vegans must be wary of egg in the pasta and dairy in the sauce. You may ask for reduced oil.
  • All Korean take-out places, e.g., Yummy's Korean Bar-B-Q (11 locations), offer vegan vegetable choices. The "vegetable plate" consists of four vegetable selections and white rice. The "vegetable plate without rice" allows five choices. Selections, quality, and portions vary widely among locations. Inexpensive.
  • Many restaurants have good to excellent salad bars and plain baked potatoes.
  • At build-your-own sandwich shops (Subway (ca. 77 locations), Quiznos (ca. 13 locations), Blimpies (2 locations) ), you may choose whole-grain bread and vegetarian/vegan/low-fat contents. Suggestion: you may build an over-spiced sandwich and eat it at home with steamed vegetables.
  • The Mexican fast food chains Taco Del Mar (7 locations) and Maui Tacos (3 locations) allow you to build your own meal, much like the sandwich shops. Components that appear to be vegan (beans, guacamole, etc.) are purposely free of non-vegan components (lard, chicken stock, egg, etc.).
  • Variously named salad shops (like Aloha Salads) can be found in malls and supermarkets.
  • Jamba Juice has 25 locations on Oahu; they are listed in the phone book or at www.jambahawaii.com. Most of the menu is vegan or vegetarian. Their smoothies have no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors.
  • Zippys has 24 locations on Oahu; they are listed in the phone book or at www.zippys.com. Local food. Vegan tofu burger & vegetarian boca burger. Their vegetarian chili is vegan, with negligible added fat or sweeteners. It is the same as that sold frozen in markets, where the ingredients can be read. Brown rice is available at all locations.
  • Almost every decent restaurant in Honolulu has at least one or two vegan items on their menu. Phone them and be surprised.
  • Honolulu is rapidly becoming friendlier to vegetarians and vegans. This Guide has trouble keeping up. Tell us what you have discovered. Send your news to diningguide@VSH.org.
