VSH Oahu Dining Guide
The following restaurants are presented by neighborhood, from Haleiwa on the North Shore through Honolulu to Kailua and Kahuku. It is best to call ahead to check the restaurant's hours and to make reservations. Members must show their current VSH membership card to receive special offers and discounts. We are unable to check all listings personally; changes may take place without notice. Many of the establishments listed have websites with menus. Natural food stores and caterers/personal chefs are listed at the end.

Sugar is not always vegan. Refined sugar is often filtered through bone-char. USDA certified Organic sugar is not allowed to be filtered through bone-char and thus vegan. (More Info) The type of sugar used by a given restaurant may be difficult to determine. 100% vegan or vegetarian restaurants are the safest route. - Hawaiian Food
Many Hawaiian foods are vegan by default. Sweet potato ('uala), breadfruit ('ulu), and taro (kalo) are typically eaten baked and completely plain. Taro is usually served in pounded form, as poi or pa'i'ai, traditionally these are always vegan as the only ingredient is taro. Poi is available at many local grocery stores and even at Costco. Laulau, the traditional Hawaiian main dish consisting of ti leaves wrapped around taro leaves filled with a filling, can be vegan (though is often not). Vegan restaurant 'Ai Love Nalo offers a vegan laulau, as does Yama's Fish Market. The yearly Punahou Carnival usually offers a vegan laulau under the name "vegetarian laulau". Kulolo is a traditionally vegan dessert made of coconut milk, poi, and sugar. Haupia is traditionally vegan, made from coconut milk, sugar, and some type of starch. Rarely, non-traditional recipes use gelatin for haupia, or may add dairy, so be wary. - Local Fruit
Papayas, pineapples, and mangoes are always vegan and the first two are frequently found completely plain at local restaurants. Visitors may be surprised by the sweetness and flavor of these locally grown fruits. - Local Japanese Food
Musubi with ume is simply plain rice wrapped in nori (seaweed) with a salt preserved plum in the middle (plum may contain MSG). Inari sushi, also known locally as "cone sushi", is generally vegan. It is a soft tofu skin seasoned with vinegar, shoyu (soy sauce), and sugar, and stuffed with vinegared and sugared sushi rice. Local favorites such as mochi and shave ice tend to be vegan as long as there is no added dairy. A popular shave ice accompaniment, adzuki beans, is typically just beans and sugar, and is a local favourite. There are a number of local tofu manufacturers, and in general, by definition, all tofu is vegan, though one local restaurant makes their own tofu and adds dairy. - Sushi
Sushi is a popular local casual food. It is a common misconception that sushi always includes fish, but sushi refers to the vinegared sugared rice used. (see earlier section on sugar) There are many varieties of vegan sushi, since any vegetable can be used in a sushi roll. Kappa maki, or cucumber roll, sushi is common and typically vegan. Natto rolls are usually vegan as well. (Natto is fermented whole soybeans, very sticky, and can be an acquired taste) Some restaurants use pre-chopped natto with preservatives added. - Thai
Thai restaurants usually have many vegetarian and vegan options. Nearly all have brown rice. Nearly all, however, use fish sauce, and their red and green curry sauces contain shrimp paste, unless homemade. Suggestion: order the green curry vegetables but have them with yellow curry sauce. - Vietnamese
Most Vietnamese restaurants have vegetarian sections on their menus and may offer brown rice. Request no fish sauce. Some offer vegan pho (made with vegetable broth) and vegan summer/spring rolls, even if not on their menus. Several vegan restaurants offer Vietnamese food, Simple Joy offers Vietnamese dishes like Vietnamese crepes (made of rice flour). - Chinese
Most Chinese restaurants will prepare whatever combination of ingredients you request. Tell them what vegetables, noodle, or sauce, e.g., bitter melon with look fun noodles and black bean sauce, you wish. Request no chicken stock. You may also request reduced soy sauce and oil and no MSG. This does not apply to preprepared foods like soups, dumplings, and spring rolls. Increasingly, Chinese restaurants offer brown rice. - Italian
Vegan restaurant Simple Joy offers made to order pasta dishes, which they will even make with gluten free rice noodles. Salt & Pepper has vegan pizza. Most Italian and many continental restaurants have one or two pasta primavera dishes (or can readily prepare one on request). Vegans must be wary of egg in the pasta, dairy in the sauce, and butter coating the pasta. Ask for no parmesean, which is often automatically added to everything including salads. (Even croutons may come pre-dusted with cheese.) - Korean
All Korean take-out places, e.g., Yummy's Korean Bar-B-Q (8 locations), offer vegan vegetable choices. The "vegetable plate" consists of four vegetable selections and white rice. The "vegetable plate without rice" allows five choices. Selections, quality, and portions vary widely among locations. Inexpensive. - American
Many restaurants have salad bars, plain baked potatoes and some will make plain steamed vegetables. - Ramen
Agu Ramen has multiple locations and serves 2 vegan ramen options designed by the Vegan Hills founding chef, which are both allium free, as well as a vegan tomato ramen. Junpuu Ramen serves 2 vegan ramen options, an allium free tan tan and a tomato ramen. Junpuu also has gluten free vegan ramen noodles and ramen be ordered regular or large. - Sandwiches
Sandwiches: All natural vegan, and organic, sandwiches are available at our listed vegan/vegetarian restaurants, some even with gluten free bread. Peace Cafe, Vegan Hills, Down to Earth Organic & Natural, and others all offer fresh made to order sandwiches. Ba-Le Sandwich Shop (9 locations) makes vegan banh mi tofu sandwiches with fresh baked Vietnamese French bread. Many of the conventional build-your-own sandwich shops can make a vegan sandwich, though they do not have any vegan protein fillings and these may have preservatives or additives that the health conscious wish to avoid: (Subway (50+ locations), Blimpies (1 location),and Quiznos (3 locations)) - Burgers
Burgers: Down to Earth Organic & Natural offers fresh made to order vegan burgers, such as Maui Taro burgers. Honolulu Burger Company offers locally made Lifestream burgers with the option of Lifestream gluten free bread. The Counter at Kahala Mall offers the famous vegan Impossible burger as well as their own vegan veggie burger. Sprout Sandwich Shop (2 locations) makes their own vegan burger patty as well. - Mexican
Down to Earth Natural & Organic Deli offers vegan made to order burritos. Mexican food can be vegan, but not everything that sounds vegan is always vegan. Beans may be cooked with lard (pig fat), tortilla chips may be fried in lard, tamales may be made with lard, cheese may appear in unexpected places, and flour tortillas may be made with whey. Be careful, the primary local producer of flour tortillas, popular with restaurants, Sinaloa, uses whey and many preservatives and additives. Down to Earth Natural & Organic Deli is a safe place to get a vegan burrito or wrap. Other all vegan restaurants sometimes have wraps or burritos. At non-vegan restaurants be careful and do not expect the tortilla to be vegan without seeing an ingredient list. Most restaurants will allow you to order the burrito or wrap contents in a bowl without the tortilla.The Mexican fast food chains Taco Del Mar and Maui Tacos allow you to build your own meal, much like the sandwich shops. and Taco Bell now has vegan options certified by the American Vegetarian Association.

Chili: Vegan Hills and Down to Earth Organic & Natural serve vegan chili made fresh daily. Down to Earth has hot fresh chili available in bulk quantity in the deli. Zippy's is another popular spot for vegan chili, but is not all natural or organic, and is high in sodium. (see Zippy's entry below) - Salads
Variously named salad shops (like Aloha Salads) can be found in malls and supermarkets. (Down to Earth Organic & Natural Deli has a full all vegetarian salad bar) - Juice and Smoothies
Many vegan and vegetarian restaurants offer fresh juices and smoothies, some with organic fruits and vegetables. (Down to Earth Natural & Organic Deli has a made to order juice and smoothie bar.) Oahu also has many locations of juice chains: Lanikai Juice has 8 locations on Oahu; view at www.lanikaijuice.com They make fresh vegan juices, and some smoothies, though not all are vegan. They also have some vegan to-go food items. Jamba Juice has over 20 locations on Oahu; find tham at www.jambahawaii.com. Most of the menu is vegan or vegetarian. Their smoothies have no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors. However, many have added sugar. The all fruit smoothies have no added sugar. - Zippys
Zippys has 24 locations on Oahu; they are listed in the phone book or at www.zippys.com. Popular local inexpensive diner chain. Vegan options are: brown rice, fresh papaya (not always very ripe), tofu burger and chili. Some locations offer vegetable sushi (sugar may not be vegan). Zippys chili is also sold frozen in markets, ingredients listed inlcude: a very high sodium content, enriched wheat flour, and "natural flavors".
